The city of La Spezia is a few kilometres from Manarola. It offers a nice historical centre and several museums and is in the centre of a gulf, spotted with many typical seaside villages. Portovenere and its isles, Lerici, Montemarcello and Tellaro are the most evocative places.

Going eastwards, you meet the Magra Valley. It is named after the river which crosses it and its historical and cultural centre is Sarzana. Sarzana hosts several antique and historical events in summertime.
